What is endocrinology?

Endocrinology is a medical speciality that deals with diseases related to the endocrine system, the glandular system that produces hormones. Endocrine glands include the thyroid, pancreas, ovaries, parathyroids, testes, adrenals, pituitary and hypothalamus.

What do endocrinologists do?

These specialists are the doctors in charge of diagnosing and treating different problems; metabolic (diabetes, hypertension…), hormonal (thyroid, menopause, infertility, cancer…) and nutritional (obesity, malnutrition…).

They also carry out research to better understand how the human body works and the diseases that concern it, also with the aim of searching for new treatments to tackle patients’ hormonal, metabolic and nutritional problems.

When to see an endocrinologist?

A visit to an endocrinologist is recommended for problems related to the hormonal system, metabolism or nutrition, such as hyperthyroidism, diabetes or obesity.

Generally, if test results show abnormalities, your GP can refer you to an endocrinologist. However, it is also possible to go directly to an endocrinologist if you experience symptoms such as rapid weight changes, nervousness, changes in body temperature, excessive hair loss or menstrual irregularities.

What are the most common endocrine diseases?

There are several endocrine diseases that require evaluation and follow-up by a specialist. Some of the most common are described below:

  • Graves’ disease: An autoimmune disorder that causes overproduction of thyroid hormones (hyperthyroidism), which can affect metabolism and other body functions.
  • Hashimoto’s thyroiditis: This autoimmune disease reduces the activity of the thyroid gland, leading to hypothyroidism. If left untreated, it can lead to serious long-term complications.
  • Thyroid disorders and pregnancy: Any thyroid dysfunction during pregnancy can increase the risk of complications, such as premature labour or placental abruption.
  • Hyperthyroidism: An overactive thyroid can cause serious problems if left untreated, such as heart rhythm irregularities, heart failure or stroke.
  • Hypothyroidism: An underactive thyroid can lead to unexplained weight gain, fatigue, feeling constantly cold, and brittle nails and hair, among other symptoms.
  • Adrenal insufficiency and Addison’s disease: Occurs when the adrenal glands do not produce enough essential hormones, such as cortisol, affecting the body’s stress response.
  • Prolactinoma: A benign tumour in the pituitary gland that causes excess prolactin, which can lower levels of sex hormones such as oestrogen and testosterone.

Regular check-ups are essential to ensure a correct hormonal balance, especially in the case of thyroid diseases. An annual analysis allows an adequate monitoring of these values and contributes to the early detection of possible alterations.

Differences between an endocrinologist and a nutritionist

Although both professionals cover issues related to nutrition, there are important differences between the role of each professional.

While it is true that the endocrinologist deals with other related problems such as thyroid, diabetes and other problems related to nutrient absorption, the endocrinologist has expertise in clinical dietetics and nutrition, but related to pathologies. In fact, the endocrinologist has knowledge of clinical dietetics and nutrition, but related to pathologies.

On the other hand, the nutritionist can design specific diets according to the needs of each person and teach them how to cook, in order to lead a healthier lifestyle. Therefore, it is a profile that is more aimed at designing diets for the patient.

They are different and complementary professionals. Of course, the same patient can see an endocrinologist and a nutritionist depending on their needs.
