Warts are bumps that appear regularly on the skin, usually small. These are minor injuries that can occur anywhere on the body. There are many types of warts. Although some of them may itch or annoy, most of them are painless and completely harmless. However, they are a cosmetic problem that various treatments can solve.
Why do warts appear?
Warts are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). They are transmitted by direct transmission through touch and when there is a wound through which the virus enters. Genital warts are caused by sexual contact. They can appear for 2-6 months from contact with infected skin. Although they occur most frequently in children and adolescents, they can occur at any age.
Some people are more likely to develop them than others. They often appear in people with a weak immune system, which is why eating a varied diet rich in fresh fruit and vegetables is essential to provide the antioxidants needed to keep our immune system at total capacity. Similarly, processed foods should be avoided as much as possible. Warts can also be caused by stress or hormonal changes, being overweight or diabetes.
It is important not to touch or scratch warts to prevent them from spreading to other areas of the body or to avoid infecting others.
Types of warts
The so-called warts vulgaris are the most common. They form mainly on the hands and other body areas and have a rough, raised surface.
Flat warts are small and smooth and often itchy. They appear on the back of the hands, face and legs.
Plantar warts form on the soles of the feet and may have a black spot in the centre, a blood vessel. They are painful because of the pressure caused by walking on them.
Filiform warts appear on the face and neck. They are thread-like and can hang on the skin.
Genital warts or condylomas appear on the skin or mucous membranes of the genitals. They are much more contagious than the others. They are often linked to certain diseases and must be treated quickly.
Periungual warts are warts that appear next to the nails.
Acrochordons, misnamed warts because of their similar appearance, are benign skin growths that are not contagious. They are widespread and usually appear on the neck, the décolleté, and groin, usually from 25 to 30 years old, and most commonly in people with a high body mass index.
REMOVE WARTS
There are various methods of removing common warts from the skin. The choice of one or the other should consider factors such as the patient’s age or size and the wart’s location.
Cryotherapy is one of the most common methods. It works by freezing it with liquid nitrogen or solid carbon dioxide, making it disappear within a few days. Topical medications based on salicylic acid, trichloroacetic acid or bichloroacetic acid are also used to remove the keratin layers of the wart gradually.
One of the best options, as it is very effective and safe, is using a CO2 laser, especially in the case of acrochordons, to remove warts on the neck and face or to remove genital warts.
